Origins of Abandonments

The one before the first one

The first abandonment I did, before I started the project, and which started the process of creating the project.

I had made this model of a couple I used to work with. They both have mobility difficulties and when they dance together, in order to balance, they make a circular space between their bodies, which always seems to me to be a very private, protected bit of space. I wanted to try to make an accurate representation of their posture and of this space between them. One evening when there was a lot of performances and interventions going on all round the mill, I finished the models and as I was wandering round I decided to do my own little bit and put my models outside in the garden. Strangely I found that it was very difficult for me to leave them, I had a ridiculous sensation of guilt, not towards the people, who it could hardly have affected, but towards the objects themselves. I only had a mobile phone with me at the time to photograph them with, and it was already dark. When I came back the next day, they had gone.
